WHEN DID NAKEDNESS BECOME WORSHIP?

Can one be more daring than this?

When you walk into a so-called worship centre, a church, supposedly a house of God, & a worshipper is practically near-naked, leaving little or nothing to the imagination, one is compelled to ask: what exactly is the message?

Clothing is supposed to cover nakedness. It is also supposed to confer some measure of dignity & decorum. And surely, when we enter a place of worship to seek the face of God, there should be something about our appearance that reflects reverence.

But apparently, we have entered another era.

When everything that ought to remain private is deliberately placed on public display, especially in a place supposedly dedicated to worship, at what point do we stop calling it fashion & begin to call it exhibition?

This is not an argument against beauty, femininity or fashion. Far from it. A woman can be beautiful, alluring & magnificently dressed without surrendering every boundary between the private & the public.

There is, after all, a time to dress to kill, a time to dress to thrill, & surely, a time to dress to worship.

What is even more telling is that another woman, apparently overwhelmed by the spectacle, felt compelled to speak out in utter disgust.

Perhaps she wasn’t merely objecting to an outfit. Perhaps she was mourning the gradual death of decorum. And perhaps we shouldn’t be completely surprised.

When some supposed men of God have turned sacred altars into marketplaces for money, influence & personal empires, can we really be astonished when the congregation begins treating those same spaces as fashion runways, social clubs & stages for exhibition?

When the altar loses its sacredness, boundaries everywhere begin to disappear. Today, almost-nakedness.

Tomorrow, perhaps, nakedness itself, defended in the language of freedom, choice & self-expression. Hmmmmmm…

And before long, those who still believe that certain things belong in private may themselves be portrayed as the problem. Hmmmmmm…

Maybe the real question isn’t what people are wearing to church.

Maybe the real question is: what happened to reverence?
