When boys pretend to be men

You want to know the depth of a man or woman? Listen to what they actually love to talk, or yap so much, about, especially in their free moments &, more revealingly, in moments of supposed vulnerability. It says a whole damn lot.

When I try just too hard to tell you about myself, particularly in ways designed to blatantly impress you, my financial worth, what I own, what I wear, the brands I carry, I am probably revealing far more than I intended. Totally unnecessary. It’s like a Dangote telling you the wrist watch, shoes, outfit he is wearing….

I recently saw a rather cringe-worthy video of someone I had admired & to a large extent, whom I had ascribed a certain level of maturity, yapping endlessly about an outfit: brand name this, brand name that. And honestly, I was shocked!

Not because talking about clothes is beneath anyone, but because I had expected far better from someone I thought was already made. At a certain level, surely, you no longer need to announce every label to prove that you have arrived. There should be a quietness that comes with being truly secure in oneself.

What made it even more amusing was that, apart from a few pieces 1 or 2 of the overall 95+% of what was being proudly advertised was actually cheap bullshit, the sort of thing a little child might be excited to boast about.

And that is really the point: be careful who you choose as your heroes, icons & idols.

Many of the people we have placed on those pedestals may not actually possess all that we have ascribed to them.

Sometimes, time & circumstance simply favoured them. And that is not the same thing as depth.

As an aside, someone just said to me that I must have dyed my beard to look like I look… Isn’t that interesting? She must believe I ain’t busy at all, to indulge in such frivolities. Of all the things to indulge in at 50 plus!! Should I hiss.
