Desmond Elliot’s 4th term ambition not a charm as it hits a snag!

Desmond Elliot

…with opposition rising against his dream to represent Surulere I again.

Hon. Desmond Elliot is no stranger to the theatre of reinvention.

From the silver screen to the charged chambers of the Lagos State House of Assembly, his journey has long read like a script destined for applause, smooth transitions, loyal audiences, & well-timed encores.

But now, the narrative is shifting.

In the restless political heartbeat of Surulere I, what once played out like a predictable sequel is fast becoming a gripping, unscripted drama. The man who once coasted on goodwill, name recognition, & formidable political backing now finds himself confronting a rare & rising resistance, one which refuses to whisper.

For nearly a decade, Elliot’s ascent bore the quiet imprimatur of power, with strong ties to Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, one of the most influential figures within the All Progressives Congress. Gbaja as he is fondly called, was the former speaker of the House of Representatives & Chief of Staff to the President of the Federation.

The alliance between Gbaja & Elliot, combined with his celebrity charm, forged a political runway that seemed endlessly extendable.

3 terms. 12 years. A tenure many would call formidable.

Yet, longevity in politics is a double-edged sword.

Where supporters once saw consistency, critics now see complacency. Where there was admiration, there is now agitation. And from within his own constituency, a new voice, clear, organized, & unrelenting, has emerged. The Surulere Accountability Front aka SAF, through its spokesperson Olanrewaju Badmus, delivers a verdict as stark as it is damning: a tenure they describe as a “wasted opportunity,” marred by underperformance & a troubling distance from the grassroots pulse.

It is the kind of critique that does not merely challenge ambition, it questions legacy.

The echoes of 2023 still linger, when his 3rd-term bid, unlike the effortless victories before it, was met with unexpected turbulence from within his own ranks. He survived that storm. But this, this feels different.

Sharper. More deliberate. Less forgiving.

Because this is no longer just about winning an election.

It is about the politics of staying too long… & the growing hunger for something new.

At 52, Elliot stands at a defining juncture, caught between the weight of experience & the whisper of fatigue from a constituency that once cheered him on.

The stage is no longer familiar. The audience, no longer predictable.

And so, the question hangs, thick with intrigue, heavy with consequence:

Will Desmond Elliot summon one final, masterful performance to silence the rising dissent…

or is Surulere I preparing to dim the lights on a political era that has, perhaps, run its course?
