Adedamola Richard Kasunmu & the Alausa Chessboard: A Calculated Ascent or a Carefully Delayed Destiny?

Adedamola Richard Kasunmu

In the theatre of Lagos politics, where ambition is both art & arithmetic, few names are beginning to hum with as much quiet insistence as Adedamola Richard Kasunmu.

Not loud. Not desperate. But unmistakably present.

At 43, ARK as he is referred to, represents a compelling paradox: a young man by demographic standards, yet a veteran by institutional measure.

1st elected into the Lagos State House of Assembly at just 32, he arrived early, learned quickly, &, more importantly, stayed. 3 consecutive terms later, he is no longer one of the promising few; he is now among the defining voices within the Assembly’s evolving power structure.

The Making Of a Legislative Operator!

There is a difference between occupying office & understanding it. Over more than a decade now, Kasunmu has moved through the legislative ecosystem with deliberate precision, Chairman of Youth, Sports & Social Development, later Lands, & now entrusted with Inter-Parliamentary Relations, whilst holding the influential position of Majority Leader.

This is not accidental progression. It is grooming.
Each committee, each leadership role, has quietly expanded his reach, across policy, across networks, & across influence. In Lagos, where institutional memory is currency, ARK is now undeniably wealthy.

The Obasa ERA: A Giant Prepares to Exit!

Every political story needs a turning point. For the Lagos Assembly, that moment appears imminent with the expected transition of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.
A whopping 6 terms. 24 years. A speakership that has defined legislative authority in Lagos for a decade.
Should Obasa proceed to the Senate as widely anticipated, he leaves behind more than a vacant seat, he leaves a power vacuum. And in Lagos, vacuums are never empty for long. They are contested, negotiated, & ultimately filled by consensus rather than conquest.

The Unwritten Constitution: Power must balance.

To the uninitiated, the speakership may seem like a straightforward elevation, the next most senior lawmaker steps forward. But Lagos operates on a deeper script, one unwritten yet rigorously obeyed.
Power must be balanced.

The emergence of a Speaker is intrinsically tied to the broader political equation: Where will the Governor come from? The Deputy Governor? Which senatorial district must be compensated to maintain equilibrium?
Kasunmu’s political base lies within Lagos West Senatorial District, the state’s most populous & politically potent zone. This is both an asset & a complication. Strength in numbers can command influence, but it can also invite redistribution, especially if other zones are deemed deserving in the grand balancing act.

In Lagos, geography is not incidental, it is destiny’s co-author.

Bloodlines & power lines.

Then comes the dimension that cannot be ignored, no matter how delicately it is discussed.
ARK is a nephew to President Asiwaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, a man whose political architecture has defined Lagos for decades & now extends across the nation. He is also the grandson of the late formidable Abibatu Mogaji, a matriarch whose grassroots influence once anchored an entire economic bloc.
This lineage places Kasunmu within a rarefied circle, where access, legacy, & expectation converge.

Yet, proximity to power is not the same as possession of it.
Even within that orbit, alignments matter. The whispered nuances surrounding his relationship with Seyi Tinubu, whether consequential or merely speculative, underscore a central truth: Lagos politics is not a monolith. It is a constellation of interests, & every star must align.

The Majority leader’s moment.

As Majority Leader, Kasunmu already occupies a position of strategic significance. It is the engine room of legislative coordination, the bridge between agenda & execution.
Historically, such a role serves as a springboard. But Lagos has never been a place for predictable promotions. The ladder exists, yes, but it is often climbed sideways.

The speakership, therefore, is not simply the “next step.” It is an entirely different game.

Merit, Timing, & The Politics of Consensus!

On paper, the case is compelling:
Youth, without inexperience
Longevity, without stagnation
Exposure across critical committees
Deep political & familial networks.

But Lagos does not run on paper. It runs on timing.
And timing, in this context, is a function of negotiations far beyond the Assembly floor, within party caucuses, among power brokers, & ultimately, within the inner sanctum of the All Progressives Congress.

The Speaker is not merely elected. He is agreed upon.

So, is it his time?
Perhaps.
But “perhaps” is the most honest answer Lagos politics ever offers.
Adedamola Richard Kasunmu stands on the cusp, well-positioned, well-prepared, & undeniably relevant. Yet, the path to the gavel is not walked alone. It is paved by alignment, endorsed by power, & sealed by consensus.
Until those forces converge, his ambition, if indeed it exists, remains suspended in that delicate space between possibility & permission.

Lastly!
In another political environment, this might already be his moment.
But this is Lagos, where nothing is accidental, everything is calibrated, & destiny itself is negotiated.

And so, the question lingers, elegant, unresolved, & utterly compelling:
Is ARK next… or simply next in line to wait?
