It is not every day that a wedding becomes a convergence of royal bloodlines, distinguished families, old-world pedigree & contemporary glamour. But then, this is hardly an ordinary wedding.
The magnificent Ojaja Royal house through one of her Oloris, is preparing for what promises to be one of the most talked-about society weddings of the year, as Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi-Ogunwus, the elegant & accomplished queen of the House of Oduduwa, makes plans to give her daughter, Princess Latoya, away in marriage.
The grand celebration is slated for the final quarter of the year, & if the early whispers surrounding the nuptials are anything to go by, this will be a wedding in which grandeur is not merely invited, it is expected.
For the proud mother, preparations are already well underway. And understandably so. When her daughter is about to walk down the aisle, there is no such thing as an ordinary celebration.
There is, however, an even more poignant dimension to this particular occasion.
The bride’s stepfather, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Babatunde Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Olofin Adimula & Arole Odua of Ile-Ife, is said to be particularly delighted by the impending nuptials. This will be the 1st wedding of a daughter with which the revered monarch is so closely associated since his marriage to Olori Aderonke.
And so, beyond the pageantry, the fashion, the flowers, the jewels & the inevitable parade of Nigeria’s glitterati, there is something deeply personal about this one.
It is family. It is heritage. It is the ceremonial passing of a daughter from one beloved household into another.
A Princess, Before She Became a Bride. Princess Latoya has lived a life that effortlessly straddles 2 worlds.
A London-based graduate, she now moves between London & Lagos, carrying with her the polish of international exposure & the unmistakable grounding of a distinguished Nigerian royal household.
Beautiful, intelligent & reportedly possessed of the quiet manners that have endeared her deeply to her mother, Latoya has long been one of Olori Aderonke’s greatest treasures.
And perhaps there is no better way to understand the significance of her coming marriage than to understand the remarkable woman giving her away.
Olori Aderonke is, in the truest sense, blue blood twice over, royal by birth & royal by marriage.
Her ancestry reaches deep into the history of Ile-Ife & the revered Lafogido Royal House. Her great-grandfather was Ooni Ademiluyi Ajagun, the formidable 48th Ooni of Ife, who reigned from 1910 to 1930.
A powerful & commanding monarch, Ooni Ademiluyi Ajagun occupied the ancient throne for 2 decades & was said to have been a formidable presence in his time. He died at the age of 70 & was succeeded by the enigmatic Ooni Adesoji Aderemi, another illustrious name in the long & fascinating history of the Ife throne.
Thus, Olori Aderonke was born a princess long before destiny made her a queen. And by that lineage, her daughter, too, is unmistakably a princess.
Now, that princess is about to become a bride.
Enter the Groom- Makanjuola Sebanjo. If the bride’s family tree reads like a page from the history of Yoruba royalty, the groom arrives with pedigree of his own.
The handsome young man is one of the children of Omoba Segun Sebanjo, popularly known in the most influential circles as Mata, the distinguished, silver-haired energy-sector heavyweight whose name has long travelled comfortably between the boardrooms of major corporations & the glamorous social circles of Nigeria’s rich, famous & powerful.
Mata’s professional resume is formidable. A respected energy expert & consummate corporate player, he has served as a director across several major oil & gas enterprises, including Forte Oil, once associated with billionaire businessman Femi Otedola. He is also the Regional Director for Africa & the Middle East at Seymour Energy Consulting, as well as Country Director of Nord Oil. But corporate accomplishment is only one part of his story.
There is blue blood running through the family veins as well.
Another Royal House. The groom’s father is himself a member of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House of the Ile-Nla Compound, Agunsebi, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, a distinguished lineage firmly embedded in the traditional aristocracy of Ijebuland.
There has consequently been considerable speculation in informed circles about whether Mata may someday be interested in the ancient stool of the Awujale & Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, should destiny, circumstance & the will of God eventually converge in that direction.
For now, however, that remains precisely what it is: speculation. The immediate royal assignment is considerably happier. His son is getting married.
And interestingly, the groom’s family carries yet another familiar name in Nigeria’s high society.
Mata’s younger sister is none other than Mrs Nike Animashaun, the exceptionally elegant & widely admired society woman & former PS of the Lagos State Ministry of Science & Technology, who served in that capacity till 2015.
And Suddenly, It All Makes Sense
Look closely at the architecture of this marriage & one begins to appreciate why the forthcoming celebration is generating such excitement.
On one side stands the ancient royal heritage of Ile-Ife, embodied by Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi & her illustrious ancestry.
On the other stands the distinguished Sebanjo family, with its own aristocratic Ijebu roots, formidable corporate pedigree & deep connections across Nigeria’s elite social & business circles. This, therefore, is not simply a wedding.
It is the meeting of 2 distinguished houses. 2 histories. 2 family traditions. 2 royal bloodlines. And, inevitably, 2 formidable social worlds.
The formal introduction took place several months ago in Lagos in an intimate family setting, deliberately away from the noise & spectacle that will accompany the larger celebrations.
Just today, the couple took another significant step with their civil wedding. But that, apparently, is merely the opening act.
The grand traditional & white wedding, the one expected to bring together royalty, captains of industry, celebrities, fashion royalty, political heavyweights, old-money society & the beautiful people of Nigeria’s social firmament, is expected to follow later in the year, with the date to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
And when that date finally drops, expect the countdown to begin in earnest. Because if the families involved are anything to go by, this will not be one of those weddings that quietly comes and goes. It will be an occasion.
The kind that occupies conversations before the invitations arrive, commands attention when the guest list emerges, becomes a fashion spectacle when the 1st aso-ebi photographs surface & ultimately finds its way into the annals of Nigeria’s memorable society celebrations.
For Olori Aderonke, though, beneath all the royalty, pedigree & glitter, the heart of the matter is beautifully simple.
Her daughter is getting married. And there can hardly be a greater joy for a mother than watching her beloved child begin a new chapter surrounded by love, family, tradition & the blessings of generations past.
