There is a reason property has always been attractive to people trying to turn questionable wealth into something that looks respectable. Property can swallow enormous sums. A mountain of unexplained money suddenly becomes an estate.
The estate becomes an investment. The investment appreciates. It can generate rent. It can be sold. It can be transferred.
And eventually, the original money can acquire a perfectly respectable-looking property history.
That is the beauty, & the danger, of it. Once such money has entered into the banking system it is legitimized already. Properties could become collateral for loans, which can be paid back with illicit money.
The money stops looking like money. It becomes an asset. Global anti-money-laundering authorities have repeatedly identified real estate as a sector vulnerable to abuse because transactions can involve enormous sums, complicated ownership arrangements, intermediaries & valuations that are not always transparent.
And let me make one thing abundantly clear:;Not every property developer, landlord, estate owner or real estate entrepreneur is dirty. Far from it.
Real estate is a perfectly legitimate & important industry. The issue is its vulnerability. When enormous sums are involved, a property transaction can provide something illicit money desperately needs: a plausible explanation.
Imagine millions entering a property business. Land is acquired. Buildings appear. Properties are sold. Money changes hands. The person is no longer simply sitting on unexplained cash.
He owns assets. He has investments. He has a portfolio. He is now, officially, a businessman. And society loves businessmen. Especially successful ones.This is where the transformation begins.
Because there is a world of difference between saying: “Where did he get all that money?” & saying::“That man is doing very well in real estate.”
The money may be exactly the same. Only the story has changed. And that story can become extremely powerful. But property is only one destination.
There is another world where enormous amounts of cash can move with astonishing speed, a world of bottles, VIP tables, celebrities, music, parties & people who apparently never ask what anything costs.
Nightclubs. Lounges. Hotels. Entertainment.
And once you enter that world, the numbers can become truly outrageous.
