₦1 TRILLION! The Day Femi ‘Ote$’ Rewrote Nigeria’s Banking History With One Monumental Bet

Except there are more powerful shareholders whose holdings remain hidden from public view, then it is safe to say that Mr. OluFemi Peter Otedola has just etched his name into the history books…Again!

The man whose name has, over the years, become almost synonymous with the dollar sign, popularly & fondly christened ‘Otedollar’, has most likely emerged as the single largest individual shareholder in any Nigerian-owned bank, & perhaps even across the West African banking landscape.

That is no ordinary feat.

It is the product of uncommon conviction, strategic patience, impeccable timing, & an investor’s ability to see tomorrow long before others even recognise today.

With his latest acquisition of shares valued at a staggering ₦77.6b, Mr. Otedola’s personal stake in FirstHoldCo Plc, the parent company of Nigeria’s oldest & one of its most iconic financial institutions, First Bank Plc, has now crossed the psychologically significant ₦1 trillion mark in market value.

Just pause for a second and let that sink in. “One trillion naira.”

Not the value of an entire company. Not a government’s annual budget. But the market value of one man’s investment in a single financial institution. That, by every standard, is extraordinary.

On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, acting through Calvados Global Services Ltd, Mr. Otedola further acquired 706.13 million shares at ₦109.88 per share, a transaction valued at approximately ₦77.6 billion.

Interestingly, this wasn’t a one-off investment.

Barely 3 months earlier, in May 2026, he had acquired another 549,535,653 shares at ₦79 per share, worth about ₦43.41 billion, further consolidating his position in the financial powerhouse.

Before this latest acquisition, his direct & indirect holdings stood at approximately 9.28 billion shares.

The fresh purchase pushed that figure to about 9.99 billion shares.

As trading closed on Wednesday, with FirstHoldCo exchanging hands between ₦112 & ₦113 per share on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), the market value of Mr. Otedola’s stake stood comfortably above ₦1.1 trillion!

That is not merely an investment. It is a statement. It is confidence expressed in its purest financial language. The timing is equally significant.

Earlier this week, FirstHoldCo overtook long-time market leaders Zenith Bank Plc & Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc in market capitalisation. From about ₦4.8 trillion at 1st, the company surged to approximately ₦5 trillion, reaffirming renewed investor confidence in the institution & its future. One man’s share of that market capitalization of ₦5 trillion was already ₦1.1 plus trillion! Let it sink in.

For students of business, this moment offers an important lesson. The world’s greatest investors rarely chase noise. They build positions. They wait. They understand value.

And when conviction meets patience, history is often the outcome.

Mr. Otedola has, time & again, demonstrated an uncanny ability to identify value long before the crowd arrives. Until recently, he was the dominant investor in Geregu Power Plc, before strategically exiting his position. Before Geregu there was Forte Oil, before Forte Oil there was Zenon Oil.

Across decades, he has repeatedly shown that wealth creation is less about excitement & more about discipline, timing & calculated conviction.

Beyond the boardroom, he remains one of Nigeria’s most respected philanthropists, quietly impacting lives while maintaining a lifestyle that reflects understated elegance rather than unnecessary flamboyance.

Always impeccably turned out, he is almost inseparable from his signature pristine white traditional attire, a style that has become part of his personal brand. His other name could also have been Mr. Tom Ford, as he is reputed to love that brand a whole lot.

His luxury residences reportedly span Lagos, London, Dubai & Monaco, reflecting a truly global outlook.

Standing quietly beside him through the years is his sumptuously elegant, & quiet wife, Lady Nana Otedola, the accomplished entrepreneur behind the renowned Garment Care brand.

Together, they are blessed with 4 children, 3 daughters & a son, & the family now looks forward to welcoming its very 1st grandchild(ren).

Every generation produces businessmen. Only a few produce investor whose moves reshape conversations, influence markets & become case studies. Whether one agrees with every investment decision he has ever made or not, one fact is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore:

OluFemi Peter Otedola @femiotedola has once again reminded Nigeria that genuine wealth is not always announced with noise. Sometimes, it simply appears on the trading floor… and the numbers do all the talking.
